Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has expressed Vietnam’s eagerness to expand its comprehensive cooperation with New Zealand during his Hanoi talks with visiting NZ Governor-General Jerry Mateparae on August 6.
Dung described the Governor-General’s visit as an important contribution to lifting bilateral relations to new levels, delivering practical benefits to both nations’ development.
The Vietnamese Government will direct ministries and sectors to coordinate with their NZ counterparts on effectively implementing the cooperation agreements reached during Mateparae’s visit.
The two sides can maximal effort in progressing through the 2013–2016 Vietnam-NZ action programme. They have pledged to continue supporting each other at regional and international forums and promote delegation exchanges at all levels.
Investment and trade cooperation should be prioritised to capitalise on the two nations’ respective advantages and boost two-way trade, Dung said.
He expressed hopes that New Zealand will maintain its generous Vietnamese official development assistance (ODA), promising the funds will be effectively disbursed to achieve clear socio-economic targets.
Vietnam would like New Zealand to add to the scholarships it offers Vietnamese students, he added.
Dung also urged the two sides to work closely during the ongoing Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP) negotiations.
NZ Governor-General Jerry Mateparae praised Vietnam’s national construction and development achievements, singling out his desires to help with matters of trade, investment, agriculture, education, aviation, clean technology, tourism, and climate change responses.
New Zealand is willing to expand its education cooperation with Vietnam by granting more scholarships and opening more Vietnam-based faculties of NZ institutions.
He hopes Vietnam will support New Zealand in its efforts to expand its ASEAN cooperation and trade exchanges.
The Governor-General reiterated New Zealand’s interest in uniting with Vietnam at multilateral forums and during the TPP negotiations.
