The department also pointed that workers held responsible for 47% of the accidents due to violations of labour safety measures and procedure.
The most common cause of death was falling from heights, which accounted for 45 percent of the total.
Other major causes of workplace fatalities were being hit with falling objects and equipment, slips and falls, burns and electric shocks.
Dong Nai has the sixth highest number of labour accidents in the country.
Last year also saw 40 fires and 5 explosion, killing 3 people and injuring 16 others, causing an estimated loss of more than VND171.6 billion.
To reduce the number of worksite accidents and occupational diseases, Vice Chairman of Department of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs Lam Duy Tin asked all sectors, localities and mass organizations to promote information dissemination to raise both employers and employees’ awareness on labour safety and sanitation, organize training and guide the implementation of regulations on the issue to businesses and workers.
Focus should be paid to the private economic sector, small and medium-sized enterprises and high-risk sectors, he said
In the meantime, inspection and monitoring activities on worksite safety and hygiene must be strengthened, he noted.
In the first three month of this year, Dong Nai reported 8 deadly accidents, accounting for 40 percent of the 2010’s figure.
