Wild elephants that escaped from Vinh Cuu Relics and Nature Reserve have been causing concern to residents in Ma Da commune in Dong Nai province’s Vinh Cuu district. A herd of seven wild elephants destroyed crops of residents in hamlets 6 and 7 during the five days from February 13 to 17. In addition, 10 residential houses were destroyed by wild elephants. Their presence threatens the livelihoods of local residents. To protect themselves against the sudden attacks, local residents have applied simple measures including beating a drum to scare away the animals or lighting fires. However, being totally secure is difficult as most attacks happen at night.
In 2009, the elephants appeared on more than 20 occasions in Phu Ly commune, destroying residential houses and crops.
