Nearly 50 bus passengers narrowly escaped disaster after their coach stalled on railroad tracks as a train approached at midnight on Friday the 13th in southern Vietnam.

The bus driver had lost control and crashed through a railway barrier to have his engine stall as the bus blocked the tracks.

The SN1 train was approaching at nearly 100km per hour and slammed into the rear of the coach, spinning the vehicle 180o – just two minutes after the last passenger exited the bus, said passenger Nguyen Thi Bach Lien.

The bus was heading along National Highway 1A in Dong Nai Province’s Long Khanh district to the popular beach resort town of Nha Trang.

“As the driver’s assistant stood to change a CD we were listening to, I heard a rumbling sound followed by grinding and metal clanging,” she recalled.

“A man sitting behind me shouted ‘train coming’ ‘train coming’, and I screamed ‘get out’ ‘get out’”.

The lights turned on, the doors opened and people scrambled out. Their shouts and the harsh noise of the approaching train were nearly deafening, she said.

After over 2 hours, the train resumed its trip and the coach passengers found other means to their destination.
