Thirteen thousand people join in 60th National Day celebrations in historic Ba Dinh Square.

The Square is decorated with flags, colorful ribbons and silk banners. There are performers in costume, artists’ displays and birds flying in formation. Beside the national flag is a large bronze medal and a sculpture of peace doves.

In his speech to begin the parade at 7am this morning, President Tran Duc Luong recalled this day 60 years ago, when President Ho Chi Minh read a Declaration regarding the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. Over the last 60 years, Vietnam has grown into a powerful, independent country.

The parade commenced immediately after the speech, with representatives from the armed forces and public securities and Hanoi citizens marching to grand music. Four helicopters from the Airforce also joined the ceremony, flying in a T-formation from Gia Lam Airport carrying the national flag.
