Ly Son has many famous cultural monuments, especially those related to the militia heroes of the Hoang Sa Flotilla in the Nguyen Dynasty who rowed boats to Hoang Sa Archipelago (Paracel) to plant sovereign landmarks and defend the islands of the motherland.
There is also the mark of the Sa Huynh culture and evidence of the mixture between Champa and Dai Viet civilisations.
The island has many famous attractions such as the Hang temple, Duc temple, An Hai communal house, Hoang Sa museum, two volcanoes Gieng Tien and Thoi Loi, as well as many special festivals including the Feast and Commemoration Festival for Hoang Sa Soldiers and a traditional boat race festival.
In recent days, after China illegally placed its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou-981 in the exclusive economic zone of Vietnam, about 114 nautical miles off Ly Son, the islanders along with Vietnamese people strongly condemned China’s illegal actions, while consistently continuing fishing in both the Paracel and Spratly archipelagoes’ fishing-ground to affirm national sovereignty and protect the seas and islands of the ancestors.
