Speaking at the teleconference, PM Nguyen Xuan Phuc spoke highly of the strong determination of ministries, sectors and localities to raise the health insurance coverage rate to 90 percent of the total population by 2020 from 76.5 percent in 2015.
“Health insurance is compulsory as regulated in Vietnamese law as well as being the interests and responsibility of everyone”, the leader affirmed.
To achieve the target, the Government leader asked Vietnam Social Insurance (VSI) to propose measures and policies on expanding the coverage to the Government.
He assigned the Health Ministry to steer hospitals and medical clinics to improve the quality of health check-ups and treatment, and avoid discriminating against health insurance card holders.
The PM also asked People’s Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities to include the rate of health insurance participants in their annual and five-year socio-economic development goals, and take the responsibility for fulfilling the target before the Government.
In Dong Nai, the number of healthcare insurance holders has thus far accounted for 73 percent of the total population, Chairman Tran Van Tu of the provincial People’s Council said at the teleconference.
The province has set a target of health insurance coverage for 73.6 percent of total population by the end of this year.
However, Chairman Tu also said that many difficulties stood in the way of having health insurance coverage expanded to 90 percent of the population.
Accordingly, Dong Nai needs to make greater efforts to reach the target of 90 percent of the total population having health insurance by 2020. Particularly, the province will include the health insurance target in its socio-economic development programmes.
