(ĐN)- As many as 500 people who had drug addictions have been treated with methadone in two local centres, according to Dong Nai provincial HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Centre.
After several months on methadone treatment, the proportion of intravenous drug user drops, and currently some patients have stopped using heroin while continuing on the treatment. Many have gained weight and seen their physical and mental health stabilise.
Proper doses of methadone under the supervision of medical staff can also help patients reduce the harmful effects of heroin, prevent HIV transmission via injection, and decrease the number of deaths due to drug shock.
Dong Nai Department of Health plans to set up two more methadone treatment facilities in Nhon Trach and Trang Bom district by the end of 2015.
