(ĐN)- Dong Nai had the seventh largest sufferers of HIV in the country. Presently, the province is focusing its activities to strengthen awareness among the society of HIV/AIDS and reduce stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.
As of September 30, Dong Nai has recorded 6,877 HIV cases, with 2,694 developed into the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and 1,606 AIDS-related deaths.
The province reported 384 new HIV cases in the first 11 months of the year, down by 75 cases against the same period last year.
Over the past time, more than 2,600 HIV-positive patients in the locality have access to antiretroviral (ARV) therapy. Recently, methadone maintenance treatment program has been carried out in the province, benefiting hundred of drug users.
The provincial HIV/AIDS Prevention Centre is planning to expand methadone therapy to treat drug users in coming time.
However, despite these achievements, there is still high risk of an outbreak of the disease as awareness among health workers and the public is still limited and subjective. Accordingly, Dong Nai will continue efforts to curb the rate of HIV infections towards the goal of three zeros in new HIV cases, AIDS deaths and discrimination.
