(ĐN)- The first methadone clinic to treat intravenous drug users was opened yesterday at the provincial HIV/AIDS Prevention Centre with the attendance of Vice Chairman Nguyen Thanh Tri of the provincial People's Committee.

Dong Nai has an estimated 2,200 drug addicts. The province plans to open its second clinic at Bien Hoa city’s  General Hospital by the end this year to treat around 150 intravenous drug users.

By 2015, additional three clinics will be built in Long Khanh township, Long Thanh and Trang Bom districts.

Methadone is a mildly addictive drug mainly used to stop drug users’ habit of using heroin, morphine, and similar addictive substances.

Proper doses of methadone under the supervision of medical staff can also help patients reduce the harmful effects of heroin, prevent HIV transmission via injection, and decrease the number of deaths due to drug shock. The therapy also helps improve patients' health and living quality significantly.
