Dong Nai roots out leprosy

The conclusion was informed by Director Tran Hau Khang of the Central Hospital of Dermatology and Venerology, who led the Health Ministry’s delegation to pay the two-day fact-finding inspection of leprosy eradication in Dong Nai from October 25-27 at the working session with the provincial Health Department.

Director Tran Hau Khang suggested ,although Dong Nai has been in recognition of eliminating leprosy, the province’s health sector should continue its efforts to maintain the leprosy prevention network from the communal to the provincial levels, focus on helping prevent disablement and improve functional rehabilitation for people disabled by leprosy as well as help them to integrate into the community and offer health insurance cards for disabled people caused by the chronic disease.

On this occasion, 5 individuals and 10 collectives were awarded certificates of merit from the Health Ministry and 5 individuals received certificates of merit from the Provincial People’s Committee for their active contributions to the fight against leprosy.

Leprosy affects mainly the skin and nerves of sufferers; if untreated it can cause progressive and permanent damage to the skin, nerves, limbs and eyes.
