Dong Nai provincial Preventive Healthcare Centre confirmed two deaths from petechial fever on July 20, increasing the number of fatalities to four since the beginning of the year.

The epidemic is now occurring in 171 communes and districts across the province. There have been 2,800 cases of the disease reported so far, up 25 percent compared to the same period in 2011.

Bien Hoa city has recorded the most cases with over 612 people infected, including two deaths, followed by Trang Bom district with 350 cases and one death.

Petechial fever has also spread widely this year in the mountainous district of Xuan Loc, which has already confirmed 300 infections, including one death.

According to the Dong Nai Department of Health, the outbreak is attributed to the lack of vaccines and unusual weather with above average rainfall.
