(ĐN)- The World Health Organisation (WHO) marks World Health Day 2012 with the theme “Active ageing: good health adds life to years”.

Responding to the campaign, a series of charity health examination programmes were organized in Dong Nai in efforts to provide comprehensive healthcare for people in rural areas.

Nearly 1,000 elderly people in Tan Phu and Trang Bom districts received free medical check-ups and medicine on this occasion.

"We must recognize the contributions of older persons and work together to promote healthy and active ageing", said Director of Dong Nai General Hospital.

Viet Nam has 8.15 million elderly citizens, making up 9.4% of the country's population. The total population will continue to increase through 2050 reaching 111 million people. However, the older population of people over age 60 will exceed the younger generation of children under 14 by 2032. The median age in Viet Nam will increase 8.2 years over the next 20 years from 28.5 years today to 36.7 years in 2030.
