Expanding trade with Middle East and Africa – Untapped potential awaits

(ĐN)- Since the launch of a national plan in 2016 to strengthen relations with the Middle East and Africa, Vietnam has established diplomatic ties with over 60 countries in these regions. Despite progress, trade and investment cooperation remain limited due to legal barriers, lack of investment protection agreements, weak infrastructure, and a thin diplomatic presence.

Experts highlight the untapped potential of these vast markets, especially in exports of Halal-certified products. To boost trade, Vietnam is encouraged to prioritize key markets, expand its diplomatic missions, and sign trade agreements with promising partners like Morocco, Nigeria, UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

As of April 2025, Dong Nai hosts two Middle Eastern investment projects and 40 African ones, with 24 local firms certified for Halal standards. However, strict Halal requirements have discouraged broader investment in this sector.

The province has signed two MOUs with partners from these regions and actively participates in diplomatic and trade promotion events. Despite these efforts, the number of Middle Eastern and African initiatives in Dong Nai remains limited compared to the province’s potential. Dong Nai authorities aim to enhance international cooperation more substantially in the coming years.
