(ĐN)- In the first ten months, Dong Nai’s cashew nuts exports decrease by 16 percent in volume to more than 27,800 tones but went up 7 percent in value compared with the same period last year.
In October, a ton of raw cashew nuts can be sold for over US$10,000, a year-on-year increase of 63 percent. Exported cashew prices are rising due to global prices increasing.
All though cashew prices are increasing, the cashew industry is still facing a shortage of cashews for export. Last year’s cashew crops saw low productivity due to unusually bad weather, which in turn led many farmers to narrow their cultivation area for cashews, or even replace cashew plantations with other trees.
Accordingly, local processors had to import material cashew for processing. The dependence on imported materials poses difficulties for the sector in ensuring product quality and food safety.
According to Dong Nai Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province is now home to over 38,000 hectares of cashews. In recent time, the locality instructed farmers on intensive cashew farming to enhance output and quality while linking up with enterprises and farmers to develop sustainable material growing zones.
