Dong Nai Port occupies a strategically important location in terms of foreign trade, linking the East, Central and Southern Highlands as a key traffic hub in the southern key economic zone (SKEZ) including HCM city, and provinces of Dong Nai, Ba Ria-Vung Tau, and Binh Duong. Reporters had an interview with Nguyen Thi Bach Mai, General Director of Dong Nai Port J.S Co., on the current operational status of the port.
How does Dong Nai Port act as a service center for importers and exporters in Dong Nai Province and other provinces in the East, South Central and Southern Highlands?
Dong Nai Port consists of the three component ports of Long Binh Tan, Go Dau A, and Go Dau B, covering a total area of 443.000sq.m. It is located close to major ports in HCMC and deep-water ports in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, meaning it acts as a transport hub in the SKEZ and as a gateway for trade with the East, South Central and Southern Highlands. To meet the requirements of global economic integration, Dong Nai Port authorities have recently invested to improve capacity. Upgrades have included a 2.6ha container yard capable of receiving 2,000 twenty-foot units (TEUs) (for loaded containers), a 3ha container yard capable of receiving 3,000 TEUs (for empty containers). Dong Nai Port is now a strategic partner for many local and regional shipping lines. The port's cargo clearance capacity has increased from 10-15 percent over the past few years.
Could you brief us on the current situation?
Dong Nai Port authorities managed to sustain moderate revenue and profits, which was encouraging, as it included expanding our container services in the context of the domestic and international economic difficulties last year. With the current infrastructure, Dong Nai Port is capable of clearing 3.3 million tonnes of general cargo and 180,000 TEUs (30 percent of which are loaded containers). It expected to reach five million tonnes of general cargo and 300,000 TEUs by 2015, becoming the main gateway to the sea for goods from the industrial zones in Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Tay Ninh.
What are competitive advantages, objectives and development orientations for Dong Nai Port?
We see that the development of a business based on three determinants: corporate culture, human resources and operational scale; so, Dong Nai Port authorities have trained and used highly qualified and experienced human resources, aimed at goals for sustainable business development, performance and prestige, and becoming one of the top ten major ports nationwide. Currently, Dong Nai Port authorities are focusing on promoting market development, business diversification, industry expansion, modernization of the port system, and training activities, so as to gradually become a busy commercial port, serving both regional and international trade./.
