In Dong Nai, rain and heat had contributed to earlier blossoming and with Tet later than usual this year, the problem was compounded.
About 20-30 percent of yellow apricot trees in the province had bloomed early because of unseasonable rains, growers said.
Grower Nguyen Van Tiep from Long Thanh district’s Tam An commune said the early flowering would lower revenue by 20-30 per cent, while the cost of fertiliser and labour had risen by 50 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.
Meanwhile, the public had cut back on flower purchases as they tightened their belts in a difficult economy. Because of the lower demand, prices were expected to be down on last year.
The early blossoming this year has occurred with both the yellow apricot bonsai and older yellow apricot trees.
Some households that grow the yellow apricot in Bien Hoa city reported that at least 15 per cent of their trees have already blossomed. “This year the weather really has not supported us,” they said.
