Chang Shin Vietnam is the first company that has received LEED Gold Certificate from the U.S Green Building Council. Could you tell us some standards or criteria of this certificate and the efforts of your company to get it?
Chang Shin Vietnam’s Product Creation Center (PCC) Building is the first building in Vietnam that achieved Gold level LEED Certificate from the U.S. Green Building Council under the “LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance” rating system. We started this project in August 2010 with a feasibility study, and then finally decided to formally register for LEED certification on December 27, 2010. During the required performance period (at least one year), we tracked the building’s performance in terms of site sustainability, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environment quality. We implemented various procedures and made the necessary improvements to the facility in order to meet the standards, and finally we received the Gold LEED certification on June 3, 2012.
This certificate also proved that Chang Shin Vietnam paid much attention to worker’s conditions and environmental protection. Thus, what do you hope and expect for your company after receiving this certificate?
We intend to use what we learned from the LEED certification project when we set up new buildings in the future. We also want to proliferate applicable LEED standards and best practices factory-wide, in order to maximize overall benefits in the long term. Right now we are focusing on energy and waste management and water conservation, while continuing to comply to indoor environment quality requirements.
As a company that has made a good contribution to Dong Nai Province in particular and Vietnam’s economy in general, what are your evaluations about the current context of the domestic economy in 2012 and this year? Do you expect an economic recovery in 2013 or it will be worse?
In 2012 the world economy was not bright when the developed economies like the US, the EU, and Japan faced with slowdown and financial risks. Vietnam’s economy is inevitably affected since it highly depends on exports and foreign investments. However, there are positive signs that the inflation can be in control, and that the government could identify the national problems. As for 2013, we are optimistic about the world situation and our business performance. We think that Vietnam’s economy will not be worse. Vietnam’s economy continues to face with its internal problems and challenges for its economic reform program with the restructuring of public investment, state-owned enterprises and the banking sector.
What are the advantages and disadvantages for your company to do business in Dong Nai in particular and Vietnam in general? Are you satisfied with the local authority? Did they provide supports for your company over the past years?
Frankly speaking, I am very satisfied with the supports of the local authorities over the years. I think what advantages our company has so far is to have a very stable workforce, they are very skillful and smart, especially, I am proud of my national leaders that make us successful and different from other companies. Thanks to the Vietnamese leaders for your great strategies and leadership to support foreign investors like us. In order to help investors in Vietnam, I think, for a long term strategy, Vietnamese government should closely control the inflation rate to better support your people because people will add more values to the company and contribute to your country’s social-economic development once their life’s quality improves and there is no more burdens on their daily life.
What does your company do for your products to compete with the others on the market and maintain the sustainable growth in the coming years?
Our company’s vision is to “be the best beyond all expectations”. This involves ensuring that our products meet or even exceed the quality requirements of our customers; the right products are delivered at the right time; costs are controlled and managed and our business operations are done in a sustainable way. In order to achieve sustainable business operations, we focus on four criteria of sustainability. First is clean production that is for the elimination of all forms of wastes and enhance operational efficiency. Secondly, we do green business practices: energy conservation, reduction and management; waste reduction and management; pollution prevention; water conservation and other environmental best practices. Thirdly, we focus on people empowerment, we inspire our most valued assets and empower them to achieve their highest potential through training and education, ensuring occupational health and safety, welfare programs and comfortable working atmosphere. Lastly, the company often has some equitable practices that show our heart with the social responsibility.
