Typically, farmer Tran Cao Thang in Suoi Cao commune has 3.5 pepper hectares; of which, 1.5 hectares are in harvest time. Thanks to application of advanced farming technique and water-saving irrigation technique on pepper, Thang achieved a yield of up to 6 tonnes of pepper per ha. The price of pepper in Dong Nai has soared to VND 90,000 per kilogram, a two-fold increase compared to the same period last year. With this price, Thang can get more than VND 500 million per ha.
Apart from farmer Tran Cao Thang, there are many famer households in the district who own 2 – 3 hectares of pepper, fectching at least one billion dong or more this year.
Local farmers are very happy after enjoying a bumper pepper crop, with prices on the increase, they are set to make large profits. However, they are facing a peculiar problem this year. Shortage of labour has made it difficult to reap the produce. The district faces a labour shortage due to the rush of farmers leaving the countryside to seek work in industrial areas.
