(ĐN)- According to cassava growers in Dong Nai province, the price of the sale of fresh cassava at the garden is nearly VND 2,000 per kilo. With this price, local farmers can get a profit of VND 25-30 million every hectare of cassava after the production cost is deducted.

Local farmers cultivated nearly 15,000 hectares of cassava for the 2010 crop year and they harvested a bumper crop with the yield of 20-25 tonnes per hectare on average. The largest growing and production areas in the province are Xuan Loc, Trang Bom, Vinh Cuu and Long Thanh districts. Due to high cassava prices over the past half year, local farmers have expanded the area under cassava cultivation. Another reason is that cassava cultivation requires very little effort and is able to generate income. However, pursuant to the recommendation of agricultural engineers, cassava cultivation for three or four consecutive seasons can degrade the soil resulting low yield. Therefore, agricultural engineers encourage the farmers to shift their focus from cassava to the cultivation of corn and bean plants to improve the fertility of soil.
