Vedan Viet Nam has kept its promise and transferred VND22.9 billion (US$1.2 million) to farmers in HCM Citys Can Gio District affected by its pollution of the Thi Vai River.

On August 13 it had signed an agreement to pay them VND45.7 billion (US$2.4 million), including half within a week, and a bank guarantee for the rest, which it has to pay by January 14 next year.
The Taiwanese MSG-maker also furnished the bank guarantee.
Nguyen Van Hau, a lawyer representing the farmers, said the company also paid the Can Gio District Farmers Association VND500 million ($26,000) to cover the costs of adding up the losses.
In Dong Nai, the province worst affected by the pollution, farmers have yet to agree on the amount of compensation.
