Major river polluter Vedan Vietnam has paid its pollution fine and part of the environmental protection fee of more than a hundred billion dong, according to the Dong Nai Department of Natural Resources and Environment.

The Taiwanese-invested monosodium glutamate maker has paid the fine of more than VND267 million (US$15,000) and more than VND111 billion ($6.2 million) of the VND127-billion environment protection fee, the department said Saturday.

The Dong Nai-based company has reduced its operation at several plants and closed down several others, and is also treating its sewage as required, the department said.
The department has asked the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to announce the victims of the pollution and the extent of damage they have suffered, for Vedan to compensate them.
It has also asked district governments to compare the ministry’s figures to the damage that the farmers themselves have stated in their letters of complaint.
Vedan Vietnam was last year found to have been releasing toxic, untreated wastewater directly in to the Thi Vai River for more than 16 years, badly polluting the environment and affecting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers.
