Nhon Trach in Dong Nai Province has set its sights on developing into a town by 2010, the district’s chief has said.

Tu Ngoc Chieu, chairman of the Nhon Trach District People’s Committee, said provincial authorities had announced a master plan for social and economic development that would help it become an urban area in the southern key economic zone.

The plan, drafted two years ago but only made public recently, envisages an investment of US$1.9 billion in 2006-10 period to develop Nhon Trach.

Of this amount, 15 per cent comes from the central Government, 20 per cent from local investors, and the remaining 65 per cent from foreign investors and official development assistance (ODA) funding.

To achieve the goal of upgrading the district, the authorities are focusing on policies to improve the investment environment and speeding up administrative reform.

Other measures include improving the administrative skills of government officials and increasing investment in education and job training.

The authorities are also paying special attention to training rural youth to provide them jobs, thus addressing the severe unemployment in rural areas.

The district will focus on development of small and medium sized enterprises, especially key areas like goods, services, labour, real estate, and finance to fully utilise local resources.

The district authorities have asked Dong Nai Province to work with other provinces in the zone to speed up major infrastructure work, especially roads.

Development of roads in the economic triangle comprising HCM City and Bien Hoa and Vung Tau towns will create favourable conditions for Nhon Trach to develop quickly.

Major projects here include an expressway linking HCM City, Long Thanh and Dau Giay, the Bien Hoa-Vung Tau expressway, upgrade of Phuoc An and Phu Huu ports, and construction of an international airport in Long Thanh District in Dong Nai.

Chieu explained that these projects, once completed, would turn Nhon Trach into an urban area and a provincial hub for trade, services, tourism, education, science and technology.
