(ĐN)- Late last week, Chairman of the Dong Nai Provincial People’s Committee Vo Van Mot chaired a meeting to review the province’s socio – economic performance in May and the first half of 2007. The report said that Dong Nai’s gross domestic product (GDP) is estimated to reach over VND11 trillion in the first half of the year, the highest-ever level, representing a growth of 15.04 per cent against the same period last year and 43.8 per cent of this year’s plan. Accordingly, the industry-construction sector registered a 16.8 per cent increase, the service sector, 14.3 per cent, agriculture, forestry and fishery, 4.2 per cent. Most prominent is the strong increase of foreign investment. The province targets to grant 60 licences for new projects capitalised at US 350 million in the first six months of this year and another 40 licences allowing operating projects to add a total of US $250 million and helped to increase the total of FDI inflow to 600 million USD. Now updated figures for the first half of 2007 sees an increase of 43% from the first half of 2006. It is expected that 15 domestic projects will be licensed in the first six months of this year, with a total capital of VND 2,488 trillion($155 million).

Positive changes were seen in education and training, culture, vocational training, healthcare, physical training and sports and other social areas. Besides achievements, the province is facing challenges and difficulties. Services development still does not match the province’s demand and a number of recent surveys have revealed a serious shortage of labour in Dong Nai province.
