The joint-stock pharmaceutical company Ampharco Viet Nam last Friday opened one of the country’s first GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices)-World Health Organisation (WHO) facilities in the southern province of Dong Nai.

The pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, located on 6,000sq.m in Nhon Trach Industrial Park, is equipped with a special air-control system that provides a clean manufacturing environment and cross-pollution prevention.

The company invested some US$15 million in the pharmaceutical plant.

Its laboratory scale and technology are equal to American and European pharmaceutical companies, with advanced production and testing systems, according to Ampharco’s president and CEO, pharmacist Nguyen Xuan Nhan.

The GMP-WHO, as well as GSP (Good Storage Practice) and GLP (Good Laboratory Practice)-certificates from the WHO, will allow the company to produce high-quality drugs for the domestic market and for export.

The company has conducted research and developed various drug formulae for cardiovascular problems and diabetes, in medicinal dosages of fast release, sustained release, and modified release, Nhan said.

Ampharco has also joined hands with foreign partners to expand research on producing medicine with modified release.

Nguyen Sy Hoang, deputy general director of Ampharco, said: "Ampharco aims to facilitate the drug price stabilisation policy of the Vietnamese Government by providing consumers with high quality and reasonably priced drugs."

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Health Minister Tran Thi Trung Chien said during its 20 years presence in Viet Nam Ampharco has contributed to improving the people’s health. Chien asked Ampharco to manufacture reasonably priced medicine accessible to the poor.

Nhan, who established Thai Van Pharmaceutical Co. in the former Sai Gon in 1969, turned it into Ampharco USA, a pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution company, in California 10 years later.

Ampharco began its presence in Viet Nam with links with local pharmaceutival companies such as Sapharco, Yteco, Medipharco and Bidiphar.
