A project on the second phase of Denmarks assistance programme for the Vietnamese fisheries sector (FSPS2), worth 245.7 million krone, was singed in Ha Noi on Jan. 18.

The signatories were Nguyen Thi Hong Minh, Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Peter Hansen, Danish Ambassador to Viet Nam.

Ambassador Peter Hansen said the assistance programme for the 2006-2010 period aims to continue reducing poverty for fishermen in nine beneficiary provinces. FSPS2 will help four main areas including fisheries administration, aquatic product exploitation and aquaculture, post-harvest technology and marketing.

In 1993, the fisheries sector was selected to receive Denmarks official development assistance. The first project aimed to build a master plan for the sector, which was followed by two projects on evaluation of Viet Nams marine resources and on seafood export and quality improvement.

The FSPS1 has positively contributed to the development of the fisheries sector over recent years. It also received support from relevant services and local people.
