Amid the hustle and bustle of a developing urban area, the temple serves as a peaceful sanctuary and a spiritual destination within the network of experiential and heritage tourism activities in the northern region of Dong Nai City.

Nearly a century of sharing the nation's historical ups and downs

The practice of worshipping Grand Lord Tran Hung Dao (his real name is Tran Quoc Tuan. He is respectfully referred to as Hung Dao Dai Vuong, and is revered by Vietnamese people as Saint Tran) originated in the North and is associated with three great victories over the Yuan-Mongol invaders. When generations of northerners migrated south to establish livelihoods and reclaim land in what is now Dong Nai, they brought with them their cultural heritage and spiritual beliefs.

Saint Tran Hung Dao Temple in Binh Phuoc ward was built not only to commemorate a national hero and a "saint" in folk consciousness but also to serve as a place for community connection. The presence of the temple in Binh Phuoc ward stands as vivid evidence of the intersection, dissemination, and deep-rooted nature of the worship of Saint Tran across all regions of the country.

Tran Hung Dao Temple is the first of 10 temples dedicated to Saint Tran in the northern region of Dong Nai City. The temple was recognized among the Top 100 favorite spiritual and cultural tourism destinations program in 2016, jointly organized by several agencies under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. In 2018, the temple received a gold plaque honoring it as one of the Top 100 typical spiritual, cultural, and charitable sites in the southern region.

Le Dinh Chanh, the head and third-generation caretaker of Tran Hung Dao Temple, said, "I heard that around 1929, my grandfather and father moved from Thai Binh province to Dong Phu district, formerly in Song Be province, to make a living. In 1936, during the French colonial period, the lives of local people and rubber plantation workers were very difficult. To provide people with a spiritual anchor, my grandfather established Tran Hung Dao Temple in Thuan Loi commune, Dong Phu district, formerly in Binh Phuoc province."

Having endured numerous wars, the temple was relocated several times. In 1975, following liberation, it was permanently established in Phu Thanh quarter, Binh Phuoc ward. The temple holds four major festivals each year, with the 20th day of the eighth lunar month marking the death anniversary of Saint Tran.

Although located in a central urban area, Saint Tran Temple features a classic architectural style, including a main hall, a rear hall, a memorial area for martyrs, and a hall for receiving guests during holidays and Lunar New Year (Tet) celebrations. The temple houses dozens of statues of various sizes, the most precious of which is the statue of Saint Tran Hung Dao.

The main hall is adorned with gilded horizontal lacquered plaques and parallel couplets. The Sino-Nom inscriptions praising the great merits and noble spirit of Saint Tran enhance the temple's solemn atmosphere and serve as lessons in patriotism for younger generations.

Ideal destination for patriotic education

Beyond its architectural and spiritual values, Saint Tran Temple in Binh Phuoc ward is an ideal destination for patriotic education and plays an important role in local tourism development.

For students in Binh Phuoc ward, visits to the temple provide a valuable opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of national history and the noble character and strategic genius of Hung Dao Dai Vuong Tran Quoc Tuan, who is not only an outstanding military leader but also a shining example of loyalty. These visits help foster national pride and a sense of responsibility toward the cause of building and defending the Fatherland.

Le Thi Thanh from Dong Phu ward said, "I have known about the rituals of worshipping Saint Tran since I lived in my hometown of Thai Binh. When I moved to Dong Phu to start a business in 1997, my family chose this temple to visit during holidays and Tet celebrations as a spiritual anchor. Whenever I come to the temple, I always feel at peace, and I pray for my family's well-being and prosperity."

With its convenient location in the heart of the Binh Phuoc ward, combined with its distinctive architecture and sacred atmosphere, Saint Tran Temple is becoming an ideal stop for visitors exploring Dong Nai.

Transcending geographical boundaries and the passage of time, the temple stands ancient, solemn, and proud in the heart of the city. It is not only a repository of unique architectural values but also a spiritual anchor, a place that nurtures and connects souls seeking their roots and the values of truth, goodness, and beauty.
