Located in the transition zone between the southern end of the Truong Son Range and Vietnam’s southern lowlands, Cat Tien National Park has diverse terrain, where mountains, rivers, wetlands, and lagoons are interwoven with a range of forest habitats characteristic of the Southeast region. The park is home to rich biodiversity resources, particularly many rare plant and animal species. Its notable flora include Afzelia xylocarpa, Dalbergia oliveri, Pterocarpus macrocarpus, and species of the Dipterocarpaceae family. Its notable fauna include Asian elephants, gaur, black-shanked douc langurs, yellow-cheeked gibbons, and freshwater Siamese crocodiles.
In addition to its scenic landscapes and biodiversity, Cat Tien National Park is home to the cultural heritage of nearly 200,000 people from 33 ethnic groups living in the communes bordering the park. Many ethnic villages and hamlets have preserved their traditional cultural values through their architecture, production methods, and lifestyles. The park is also home to the Cat Tien archaeological site and the War Zone D Revolutionary Base.
