The unique Dinh Yen sedge mat market in Lap Vo district has been in existence for more than a century. Dinh Yen sedge mat craft village was recognized as an intangible national cultural heritage in September 2013 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The most prosperous period for the craft village was in the 1980s when Dinh Yen sedge mats were exported to Eastern European nations, Cambodia, and Thailand and became popular among foreign consumers. A pair of finished sedge mats can fetch VND25,000 – 50,000, depending on the quality and design. Sedge mats come in a range of sizes. Local residents sometimes use machines to make sedge mats rather than weaving by hand. Through their skillful hands, hundreds of households produce millions of durable sedge mats with colourful patterns. Previously, Dinh Yen sedge mat craft village was known as Chieu market (or Ghost Market), opening at night and closing at 2am. |
