The Lang Sen Wetland Reserve in Long An province has become the seventh site in Vietnam to be named on the Ramsar Convention’s List of Wetlands of International Importance.
The Long An provincial People’s Committee held a ceremony on November 27 to receive a certificate honouring the acknowledgement.
Spread across approximately 5,000 hectares in Tan Hung district, the Lang Sen reserve is a typical example of the Dong Thap Muoi Wetlands ecosystem in Vietnam's Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta thanks to its ecological diversity.
The reserve is home to around 156 kinds of flora and 149 kinds of fauna, many of which are mentioned in Vietnam’s Red Book and the World’s Red Book, such as the red-crowned crane, oriental darter and glossy ibis.
According to Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Nguyen Thanh Nguyen, the winning of the recognition is the result of a joint effort made by local authorities and relevant sectors in protecting and preserving the site.
He also pledged the province’s commitment to continue safeguarding the reserve while promoting it as an attractive ecological tourist site for visitors and a research address for scientists.
The six other Ramsar sites in Vietnam are Xuan Thuy Natural Wetland Reserve in Nam Dinh province, Ba Be Lake in Bac Kan province, Bau Sau in Cat Tien National Park in Dong Nai province, Tram Chim National Park in Dong Thap province, Ca Mau Cape National Park in Ca Mau province, and U Minh Thuong National Park in Kien Giang province.
