Cat Tien National Park: A Paradise of Birds

Cat Tien National Park, the largest tropical forest in Vietnam, covers 74,000 hectares of lowland forest and swamp and is home to numerous birds. It is located in a place of breath-taking beauty and has been recognized as the World Biosphere Reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The Cat Tien National Park is a birds paradise with more than 351 species of birds, including Greater Racket-tailed Drongo, Bulbuls, Common Iora, Golden-fronted and Leafbirds,  Lineated and Green-eared Barbet, Black-hooded and Black-naped Oriole, Red-breasted Parakeet, White-rumped Shama, Vernal Hanging Parrot, Dollarbird, Woodswallow, Asian Palm Swift, Barn Swallow, Spotted and Red-collared Dove, Greater Coucal, Drongo Cuckoo, Oriental Pied Hornbill, Great Hornbill, Bronzed; Black and Crow-billed Drongo, White-crested Laughing Thrush, Lesser Adjutant, Woolly-necked Stork, Egrets, Herons, Osprey, Purple Swamphen, Bronze-winged and Pheasant-tailed Jacana, Kingfishers, Lesser Whistling-duck, Oriental Magpie Robin, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, Minivets, Black-naped Monarch, Chestnut-headed Bee-eater, Olive-backed, Sunbird, and many other species.

Most notably, there are confirmed records of 31 globally threatened and near-threatened bird species from the national park, the highest total for any protected area in Vietnam. Cat Tien supports all three restricted-range species that define the South Vietnamese Lowlands Endemic Bird Area: Orange-necked Partridge, Germains Peacock Pheasant, and Grey-faced Tit Babbler. Cat Tien is also one of the best sites in Vietnam to see Green Peafowl, Siamese Fireback, Wreathed Hornbill, Great Hornbill and Bar-bellied Pitta.

 

In the past time,  Cat Tien National Park’s Ecological Tourist Center arranged many bird watching tours periodically. The tours attracted a large number of foreign visitors from Europe, Australia, Japan and South Africa, etc. Many experienced birdwatchers such as Mr.Jonathan Eames, Programme Manager of BirdLife International in Vietnam, Mr.Uthai Treesucon, Chief Executive of BirdLife International in Thailand, Mr. Ben King, the author of “Birds of South-East Asia”, Mr Philip Round, the author of “Birds of Thailand” recognized the Cat Tien National Park as a birds paradise. They come here for bird watching every year.
