According to reports from local authorities, the 33-year-old policeman was visiting a beach in Vung Tau Province with his family during the Hung Kings' holiday on April 10 when he heard calls for help from a group of tourists. Hieu rushed to the site to see some people being washed away in an area with high waves and fast-flowing water.
After the four victims were sent to hospital, Hieu joined a local rescue team to find the body of a fifth member of the group.
Doctors at the Ba Ria Hospital said that the rescued four were recovering.
The brave action of the police officer was recorded by many visitors at the beach and the story was widely shared on many news websites and social media.State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc on April 11 sent a letter to express his thanks and praise Hieu. President Phuc said he was moved by Hieu’s bravery and effort.
"His actions are brave, noble, and admirable," the state president said. "Such exemplary examples should be shared people can have more faith in the good things in life."
The state president also requested awards be presented to the man to encourage others to emulate his behaviour.
Speaking with Dantri/Dtinews, the firefighter policeman said that he was sorry that he could not save all the victims and one of them drowned.
"I had swum for a long time and was feeling tired and about to leave the beach when hearing the calls for help," he said. "Rushing to the site and seeing the victims, I was a bit worried that I wasn't strong enough to save them all on my own. But I didn't have time to think much but just tried my best to save them. I'm a rescue worker so I was just doing my work."
