Tan Mai fishing village in Bien Hoa has existed for more than 10 years on the Dong Nai River. The village is home to nearly 400 households who live in floating houses and earn their living by raising fish. There are around 850 fish cages attached to their houses which has caused serious pollution to the river and affected the landscape in the area.
According to vice-chairman of Bien Hoa City People's Committee, Huynh Tan Loc, they are going to remove the fishing village to carry out several projects along the Dong Nai River including the Thong Nhat Bridge and a nearby road.
"We also need to clean the river which has been heavily polluted," the official said. "Therefore, we need to remove the fishermen here who will have to find other places to live and other work to do."
Despite agreeing with local authorities' plans, many fish farmers on Dong Nai River have expressed worries about what to do as they have never done any work other than raising fish.
A local man, Nguyen Can, said that he and hundreds of other villagers here have been living and working on the river for dozens of years. Many of them will face difficulties finding other work.
“I'm not young now and they won't recruit me to work in factories," he said.
Another villager, Tran Thi Hoa, wanted local authorities to give them some financial support so that they can start a new life on land.
“We've invested billions of VND on our fish cages," she said. "Now we really need money to do new work."
The vice-chairman of Bien Hoa City People's Committee confirmed that they have approved spending VND 30 billion to support fish farmers on the Dong Nai River find new homes and work.
