According to people in Thanh Son Commune, Dinh Quan District, wild elephants have often threatened their lives by destroying crops and trees over the recent years. The problem has further worsened over the past six months.

A local woman, Nguyen Thi Lien said that in previous years, wild elephants used to appear in groups of two or three at night in the commune; but recently, the number has risen to 5-6 elephants which even come to local villages during the day.

According to Lien, elephants have visited her fields every day over the past 20 days.

Le Van Do, head of Village 5, said that more than 100 local households have been affected by elephants so far this year with dozens of hectares of crops and fruits ruined. It would take people around several years to recover their fruit gardens. The total loss would be reported to management agencies for support.

Pham Thanh Huong, vice chairwoman of Thanh Son Commune, said that the commune wants district authorities to install electric fences to deal with the problem.
