(ĐN) – African swine fever (ASF) has spread across 73 communes in Dong Nai province, forcing the cull of more than 94,300 pigs, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reported at a meeting on measures to fight ASF held on July 15.

“The complicated weather development, small-sized farms and the virus’s characteristics pose a high risk of spreading the virus to other localities and to bigger farms,” the department said.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairman Vo Van Chanh of the provincial People's Committee emphasized the need for communication and prevention and control measures to protect healthy pigs.

Accordingly, the province will continue efforts to call on farmers to not increase pig numbers at this time due to high disease risk, tighten control over the transport of livestock.

Many farmers are still not fully aware of the dangers of ASF and have not applied bio-security measures. And pig culling has not always been carried out safely as staffs are not adequately trained and they lack proper equipment and chemicals.
