The request was made on Monday when transport minister Nguyen Van The and the working group met with the provincial People’s Committee to discuss issues related to the mega-airport project in Long Thanh District, zing.vn reported.

The first phase of mine clearance is expected to cost VND50 billion (US$).

When approved, the province will co-ordinate with the Ministry of National Defence to carry out the project.

Tran Van Vinh, vice chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said that assigning bomb clearance to one investor would save time so that land could be handed over to the airport’s investor.

The province has also asked the ministry to consider expanding the HCM City-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway to 10 lanes to ensure traffic runs smoothly when the airport is put into use.

It also asked Airport Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to prioritise the use of local labour resources to build the airport, giving priority to households that had been relocated for the project.

According to an ACV survey, it would need about 10,000 workers, said Do Tat Binh, deputy general director of ACV.

In the short term, ACV needs about 2,500-3,000 employees; 50 per cent unskilled and the rest trained labourers.

Covering a total area of more than 5,580 hectares, the airport will be located in six communes in Long Thanh District in Dong Nai Province.

The airport’s total investment is VNĐ336.63 trillion, with construction divided into three phases.
