Dong Nai provincial People’s Committee has submitted for approval from the PM an evaluation of land reclamation, compensation and resettlement for the Long Thành International Airport.

The costs for reclamation, compensation and resettlement would be VNĐ23 trillion (US$ 1 billion), including 5,000ha for site clearance, which would total VNĐ17.855 trillion (US$776 million) and VNĐ4.200 trillion (US$182 million) for two resettlement zones.

The zones would be in the Lộc An-Bình Sơn and Bình Sơn areas in Long Thành District.

According to the project’s pre-feasibility report, the 282-hectare Lộc An – Bình Sơn resettlement area would be built in the 2018-19 period for more than 4,700 relocated households.

A second resettlement area, Bình Sơn, also covers more than 81 hectares. It would be developed in the 2018-20 period.

The zoning of the two resettlement areas is in line with the province’s socio-economic development plan to form a new urban area .

Residents in the affected area will be given vocational training so they can work at local industrial parks or the airport.

The airport, to be located 40 kilometres from HCM City, 30km from Biên Hòa City and 70 kilometres from Vũng Tàu City, is planned to have capacity of 100 million passengers per year and 5 million tonnes of cargo a year.

The project includes three phases with the first expected to begin in 2020 and completed no later than 2025, the second by 2035, and the final after 2035.

The airport is expected to ease the overload at Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport in HCM City.

The Prime Minister has also approved a plan to expand and upgrade Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport by building another terminal with total expected expenditures of VNĐ18 trillion (US$790 million).

The airport aims to have capacity to serve 57 aircraft per hour and 50 million passengers per year. Currently, the airport serves around 35 million passengers per year.

The expansion of the airport, which serves both civil and military demands, along with the opening of the first phase of the new Long Thành International Airport by 2025, is expected to relieve passenger overcrowding.
