The authorities of Dong Nai province, where Long Thanh Airport is planned to be built, have approved a plan to offer vocational training to local residents displaced by the project.

It is estimated that 15,000 people living in 4,864 households in six communes of Long Thanh district will have to be relocated.

Those of a working age and with permanent residential registration in these areas – estimated at 10,000 – will be provided assistance in learning new skills, finding new jobs and rebuilding their lives.

Displaced residents will be offered work for locally-based enterprises or for the Long Thanh Airport project.

An estimated VND305 billion (US$13.1 million) will be earmarked for the support plan which will be implemented from now until 2020.

According to the Dong Nai government, the construction of Long Thanh airport, designed to replace the overloaded Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, will require the reclamation of 5,000 hectares of land.

Construction of the new US$16-billion airport is expected to begin in 2020 with the first phase scheduled for completion by 2025.
