(ĐN)- A meeting was held in Dong Nai to review population and family planning work in 2017.

Speaking at the meeting, Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Hoa Hiep affirmed that the province has made uninterrupted efforts to improve population quality and maintain a reasonable birth rate. However, a big gap in the fertility rate among regions across the province and gender inequality at birth are among challenges to the population work.

She stressed that the birth-rate has been declining, but this is believed to be short-term and unsustainable. Besides, the province also saw an alarming gender imbalance as among newborns this year with a birth rate of 107.8 boys for every 100 girls.

In 2017, rate of birth reduction maintained at 13.31 percent, a year on year increase of 0.59 percent; while the population growth rate was 0.97 percent. The province also reached a prenatal screening rate of 75.6 percent and the rate of newborn screening of over 58%.

In the coming time, education campaigns will continue to be held to raise public awareness on family planning and gender equality. Vice Chairwoman also suggested changes in the population work in the new context, including improving the quality of human resources and developing health care systems.
