A well water sample taken from Dong Nai Province catches fire |
The incident began early of May this year, affecting households in Phu Son Commune in Tan Phu District who have to stop using their own well water and now using water from their neighbours’ homes.
On June 13, Dong Nai Province’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment announced the result of the test on the local well water. The water was found to contain petrol and phenol.
In early 2016, wells of many households in Phu Lam Village, Phu Son Commune have started facing pollution. Initially, the water had a bad smell and turned into yellow. Since early May this year, an oily film has been seen at the wells and has caught fire when exposed to flames.
The provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment sent a task force and took water samples for test. As a result, the water of eight wells which were located some 40 metres from Nam Cat Tien petrol station were seriously polluted with petrol and could catch fire.
The Dong Nai Department of Industry and Trade has halted operation of the petrol station to inspect the petrol leakage. The petrol station has been also requested to pay compensation to the affected households and deal with the petrol leakage.
Following the case, the department has asked local petrol retail units to tighten control over their storage systems to ensure the safety.
