A truck driver has turned himself in after fatally hitting a traffic police officer who was trying to pull him over in Dong Nai on Saturday.
Tran Manh Thong, 25, handed himself over to police on Sunday afternoon after running over Major Le Quang Minh, 41, a traffic police officer from the provincial Department of Police.
The incident occurred on Saturday night along the section of National Highway 1 close to the Dong Nai Bridge toll booth.
Thong was flagged down by a team of police officers to pull over, but refused to comply with the order and attempted to drive away.
Once the vehicle was forced to stop at the toll booth, Maj. Minh approached Thong and demanded that he follow the directive.
The conversation quickly escalated before the truck driver continued to attempt to steer the vehicle away. Minh hung onto the truck’s rear-view mirror, insisting that the driver stop his vehicle.
The officer soon lost his grip however and fell onto the road, where he was run over by the truck as Thong continued to drive away.
Following an investigation, officers successfully identified the driver, but only met by his mother on arrival at their tenanted house.
After being made aware of the incident, Thong’s mother convinced her son to turn himself into police.
Lieutenant General Nguyen Van Son, Deputy Minister of Public Security, along with Nguyen Quoc Hung, vice-chairman of the Dong Nai People’s Committee, and officials from the provincial police department have extended their condolences to the victim’s family at his funeral.
Relevant authorities are continuing their investigation of the case.
