The PM has approved a national programme on ensuring safe water supply in the 2016-2025 period, targeting to provide clean and hygienic water for 95-100% of the population by 2025.
The programme will be implemented in urban areas and rural residential areas in all cities and provinces throughout the country from now until 2025, with the goal of providing safe water to manage risks and address the possible incidents relating to water sources, water treatment and water pipeline.
It also seeks to ensure regular and sufficient supply of sanitary water, contributing to improving the quality of life and protecting people’s health.
Under the programme, about 90-95% of the population will have access to hygienic water by 2020, with the rate of the safe water supply systems and the safe water supply plans realized covering 45% of urban areas and 35% of rural areas. The rate of untreated wastewater discharged directly into the environment is targeted to be reduced by 80-85% in urban areas.
By 2025, the rate of residents supplied with clean and sanitary water will reach 95-100%, while the rate of the water supply systems and the safe water supply plans realized cover 50% of rural areas. The rate of untreated urban wastewater will be cut to 70%.
In order to achieve the abovementioned goals, the programme will build and perfect a mechanism and policies on safe water supply; manage the exploitation, use and protection of water resources; encourage the application of information technology to ensure safe water supply; and enhance safe water supply capacity.
