Dong Nai bridge collapse paralyses north-south rail route

The collapse of Ghenh Bridge, a key bridge on the North-South railway line, has affected the train schedule of 5,200 passengers, according to the Vietnam Railway Corporation.

The collapse of Ghenh Bridge, a key bridge on the North-South railway line, has affected the train schedule of 5,200 passengers, according to the Vietnam Railway Corporation.

According to initial reports, Ghenh Bridge across the Dong Nai River in the southern province of Dong Nai, collapsed at noon on March 20 after a barge crashed into one of its piles, leaving two spans of the bridge to collapse.

Despite causing no human loss, railway services have been suspended during the repairs. Around 30 trains with a total of 52,000 passengers have been affected by the accident.

After the case, the corporation has blocked the scene and put moved the passengers from Bien Hoa Station in Dong Nai Province to HCM City. The firm will also adjust the train schedule while the bridge is being fixed.

According to the Ministry of Transport, it will take around five months to fix the bridge. The provincial authorities and the Vietnam Road Administration are discussing building a temporary railway bridge.

Passengers are able to return their tickets without charge.

The Ministry of Transport has set up a special working group led by Deputy Minister Nguyen Ngoc Dong to deal with the collapse of Ghenh Bridge which was built more than 100 years ago and is used for both railway and land transportation.
