At least 68 traffic accidents occurred nationwide during national Liberation Day and the May Day, killing 36 people and injuring another 37.
On the first day of May, the country witnessed 36 cases, claiming 22 fatalities and 17 injuries, mainly road accidents, according to the National Committee for Traffic Safety.
Traffic police handled nearly 23,700 traffic law violation cases, collecting total administrative fines of 13.7 billion VND (over 649,000 USD) and detaining 48 cars and 2,100 motorbikes.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, in a notice issued on April 29, urged ministries, sectors and localities to prepare all necessary measures to ensure road safety and tackle traffic jams during holidays.
According to the Road and Railway Traffic Police Department, more than 100 people died and 185 were injured in traffic accidents throughout Vietnam during holidays last year.
Police reported that they handled 41,000 traffic violations, most of them involved overloaded coaches and speeding.
