GSO chief Nguyen Bich Lam said the census, the first mid-decade one yet carried out, would cover about 1.1 million households, five per cent of the total nationwide.
The event falls between the census of 2009 and another to be held in 2019 and follows a decision approved in 2012 by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.
About 13,000 census takers will be mobilised to carry out the work.
Lam said the task was aimed at collecting data to assess national policies on population and housing and the implementation of the socio-economic development plan for 2011-15.
Results of the census will be announced in October.
