Concerned agencies in Dong Nai province are investigating the cause of pollution in the Dong Nai and Cai rivers that has killed many tons of fish raised in rafts in the rivers.

A working group of relevant agencies arrived in the province’s Bien Hoa City on Monday to consider a situation in which many fish breeders suffered great losses due to mass fish deaths, ranging from about 200 kg to as much as 10 tons per breeder.

Many breeders blamed the deaths, which occurred from December 28, 2013, on wastewater discharged from chemical plants nearby.

Such sudden deaths have also happened in the past, they added.

Tran Duc Can, who had the highest volume of dead fish due to pollution, said most of the dead fish were carp, hemibagrus, and red tilapia.

Recently, the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment tested samples of the river water many times and reported that they contained pollutants at contents above acceptable limits.

The rivers have been contaminated with pollutants released from plants, Bien Hoa Industrial Park 1, and households, the department said, adding that it has issued warnings about the pollution many times, but the situation has yet to be improved.

According to the Bien Hoa City People’s Committee, many fish breeding households located in the area where the mass deaths occurred are subject to relocation under a decision by the authorities, but many of them have yet to comply with the decision.

Therefore, when suffering losses caused by pollution, these households were hesitant to report it to the authorities, the committee said.
