The National Action Month on Population was launched on December 4 in Ha Noi under the theme “An Ageing population – Challenges in looking after the elderly.”

The Ministry of Health called upon its staff to successfully realize the Strategy for population and reproductive health during the 2011-20 period; improve population structure and quality, reduce premature marriages and expand the coverage of health insurance.

The sector was asked to deal with an ageing population, improving health care for old people and increasing their income.

Viet Nam has entered the aging-population period since 2011, six years earlier than forecast. It witnessed the fastest aging pace in Asia and the world.

Last November, Viet Nam welcomed the 90 millionth citizen, making the country the 14th most populous country in the world and the 3rd largest in Southeast Asia. The historical event is expected to come up with new opportunities as well as challenges for Viet Nam.

The country is currently in the “golden structure” period with abundant labor force which serves economic growth and generate sufficient funding for social welfare before going deeply into the aging-population period.
