Police from the Ministry of Public Security said they have detained a reporter of a Ho Chi Minh City-based newspaper for his allegedly taking a bribe from the owner of a bar in Dong Nai province.
The police also arrested two others involved in the case.
Accordingly, Vo Thanh Tung, 31, whose penname is Duy Dong, of Phap Luat Thanh Pho Ho Chi Minh (Ho Chi Minh City Law) Newspaper, was arrested at yesterday noon, August 7, at a restaurant in a hotel in the province’s Bien Hoa City, when he was receiving a wad of US dollar banknotes from the bar’s owner.
An employee of the restaurant told Tuoi Tre that “after checking the money, police handcuffed Tung and another man named Tai.”
Police later escorted Tung to his home for a house search, during which police seized many documents, a number of computers, cameras and video cameras. They also seized two stun guns, a handcuff and a set of cudgels.
While the search was underway, a man arrived at the house on a motorbike. When seeing policemen in the house, the man drove away, but he was seized by police soon later. The man was later called Minh.
Before his arrest, Tung had written series of articles exposing violations at many bars in Dong Nai and Binh Duong provinces.
A source told Tuoi Tre that Minh and Tai were Tung’s own contributors who assisted him in the process of writing those exposé articles.
In talking with Tuoi Tre on August 7, Pham Phu Tam, Editor-in-chief of the newspaper said he had yet to receive any official information from the Ministry of Public Security about Tung’s arrest.
The newspaper will contact concerned agencies soon to clarify the issue, Tam said.
