Once completed, National Highway No. 1A will be upgraded with two lanes for motorbikes and four lanes for cars and trucks on the entire route.

The MoT expects to have all BOT (build-transfer-operators) mobilised and working on the construction project by the end of April, but needs the co-operation from local authorities to expedite land clearing and relocate families to ensure that the project work can progress satisfactorily.

The trans-Vietnam Highway No. 1A stretches 2,300km from Huu Nghi Quan Border Gate in the northern border Lang Son province to Nam Can town in the southernmost Ca Mau province, including the 1,887km long heavy traffic section from Hanoi to Can Tho.

Currently, some parts of the route are overloaded, especially the section running through Ha Nam – Ninh Bình – Thanh Hoa – Ha Tinh, Can Tho – Phung Hiep, and Dong Nai – Phan Thiet, creating an urgent need of upgrading and expanding the line.
