Dong Nai Police have arrested Nguyen Ba Tung, 29, and Ly Van Lai, 20, for abducting a local chicken farmer for ransom.
Their four accomplices have been hunted by local police since February 2 .
Initial investigations revealed that chicken farm owner Nguyen Van Ngoc, 50, was driving home from a party around 9:30 p.m. on the same day when a car collided with him, causing him to fall off his motorbike. Two men got out of the car and drove away on Ngoc’s bike, while four others took him into the car.
Ngoc said that the gang covered his head with a jacket, tied his arms and legs, and lashed him with an electric whip while demanding VND3 billion (over US$144,000).
“I said three billion dong is too much, and I have to sell my properties to have enough [money], so they asked me to call my family to bring 500 million dong in exchange for my life, or they would kill me,” he said.
“I must have my family borrow money, but could get only 400 million dong.”
The kidnappers then asked Ngoc’s relatives to deliver the money by taxi to a water factory in Dong Nai’s Bien Hoa city, according to investigators.
At around 11 p.m., his family arrived at the factory as requested, but the gang then changed the venue to a park two kilometers away.
Ngoc’s family had contacted the police, who caught Tung and Lai at the park, but their accomplices, however, were able to escape with Ngoc.
Police chased them, firing warning shots, but they sped away toward Binh Thuan province.
According to Ngoc, they blindfolded and bound him, pushing him out of the car in a rubber forest as they fled. He said he was able to unfasten the rope a couple hours later and asked for help at a nearby gas station.
One of the kidnappers used to deliver materials to Ngoc when his chicken farm was being constructed, he said, without providing further details.
